Vipassana Dipani and Magganga Dipani

by Ledi Sayadaw

Knowing that reliable information on the practice of insight meditation was much needed by practitioners in the West, Ledi Sayadaw wrote the The Manual of Insight. He covers many topics, such as the distortions of perceptions, the Noble Truths, the higher knowledges, Nibbana, and others, fully expounded and furnished with brief descriptions, some of which are drawn from the Pali texts, while others are the product of Ledi Sayadaw’s own teachings.

The second manual, The Noble Eightfold Path and Its Factors Explained, was written by Ledi Sayadaw in Burmese and later translated into English by U Saw Tun Teik. It contains a clear explanation of all the path-factors. This excellent, concise manual has only recently come back into print in conjunction with The Manual of Insight, in this welcome edition by Pariyatti Publishing.

Ledi Sayadaw’s concise, clear and extensive scholarly work serves to clarify the experiential aspect of the Dhamma. The Burmese monk holds an important place within the tradition of Vipassana as taught by S.N. Goenka, having appointed the lay-meditator Saya Thetgyi as a teacher, who then taught Sayagyi U Ba Khin, Goenkaji’s own teacher.
